7 Roadside Attractions in The Lehigh Valley
When you take a long drive through any American state you are bound to stumble across some weird and interesting things. The Lehigh Valley is no different with a number of quirky and downright strange roadside attractions and oddities.Whether you are road tripping through or you want to see what’s in your area, checking out these attractions can be a fun and interesting adventure.
The Big Chair
Route 191 (Valley View Drive), in Upper Mount Bethel Township
Have you ever seen a 20-foot Adirondack chair? Well if you journey to Upper Mount Bethel Township you can! This enormous chair sits on private property but the owners have been welcoming to visitors over the years who want to climb up and take a photo or two.
Columcille Megalith Park
2155 Fox Gap Road, Upper Mount Bethel Township
If you want to visit an interesting place where you could actually spend the day you should head to Columcille Megalith Park. This park is expansive and features stone towers, circles and trails. It’s part Stonehenge and part Buddhist temple. The park is a great place to visit but be sure to appreciate the sights in silence - it’s all about quiet relaxation here.
Stinson The Dinosaur
2525 Interchange Road, Lehighton
If you are ever driving on Route 209 in Lehighton keep your eyes peeled for Stinson, a nine-foot-tall red skeletal dinosaur. The dinosaur was originally installed to raise awareness for strokes and has a mailbox right beside it.
The Tall Gnome
10408 Old U.S. 22, Weisenberg Township
One attraction that would definitely grab your attention if you were driving by is the Tall Gnome. This is a very tall wood carving of a gnome in an old tree. If you look across the street you can spot a few other gnomes carved into another tree! The art was created by the owner of Old Spokes Auto Museum and is a local favorite. Unfortunately the art may not be too long for this world with carpenter ants eating away at the wood.
Lehigh Millennium Folk Arch
Lehigh University campus, in Bethlehem
This place, also known as Stolfo Sculpture Garden, is a park full of odd pieces of art that was started in 1999. The park explores mysticism with sculptures and some truly other-worldly art. A big piece is the main arch with etched in drawings waiting for you to explore and interpret.
Steel Dinosaurs
50 Industrial Drive, Alpha
Imagine showing up to a steel fabrication plant and being greeted by enormous steel dinosaurs? This is the case if you travel to GJ Oliver in Alpha. Though they sit on private property you can still see these magnificent creatures (and a steel caveman for some reason) from the road.
Fireman’s Drinking Fountain
Main Street, Slatington
Want to do a little time travel? Check out the Fireman’s Drinking Fountain in Slatington. This colorful fountain was installed in 1910 as a water source for both people and horses. The fountain was restored in the 1980’s after it was damaged in a car crash but still remains a fun blast from the past.
